10. Kuru Kuru Sushi
Kuru Kuru Sushi is the only conveyor belt sushi bar in town. The price for each plate ranges from $1.50 to $6 at most. On each plate you get a few pieces of sushi (depending on what type) and the quality can't be beat. The fish is super fresh and delicious! The service is great (especially since you basically serve yourself off the conveyor belt) and it is affordable. Definitely a must try if you like sushi! My favorite is the crunchy California Roll.
9. Coconut Kenny's
Coconut Kenny's is a Hawaiian themed restaurant that serves Pizza and sandwiches. The smallish dining area has a huge tropical mural and tiki roofs. It feels like you're walking into a tropical oasis in the middle of (often rainy and glum) Bellingham. They also have daily specials and a few beers on tap. This place is definitely worth a visit if you're in the mood for a little Hawaiian fun.
8. Boomer's Drive In
Boomers is a Bellingham staple. It opened in 1989 in the style of a 1950's drive-in. They serve a variety of delicious burgers, hot dogs, salads, hard ice cream milkshakes, and waffle fries: just good old fashioned American fare. Boomers has been voted best burgers in Bellingham many times in a row. If that's not motivation to try out this Bellingham icon I'm not sure what is.
7. Boundary Bay Brewery
The Boundary Bay Brewery and Bistro has been open for business since 1995. They are well known for the brews that push the envelope. They are located downtown on Railroad avenue and is a business that has become deeply involved in the Bellingham community. Many of their beers, such as the Ski to Sea ESB, are named for Bellingham events and ideals. Probably their two most popular beers are their IPA and Scotch ale. Next time you're in the area (or anywhere in Bellingham because the majority of local restaurants have one on tap) try one of their beers and see if you agree.
6. The Harris Avenue Cafe
The Harris Avenue Cafe, located in the Fairhaven neighborhood, is the place to go for breakfast in Bellingham. They serve breakfast into the lunch hour and also have quite a few vegetarian and vegan options. (In Bellingham this is very important.) I have yet to find someone say a negative thing about this restaurant. The service is always prompt and friendly and the fare is delicious. If you get a hankering for breakfast or brunch on a Saturday or Sunday morning (possibly after an eventful Friday or Saturday night) give the Harris Avenue Cafe a try.
5. The Table by Bellingham Pasta Co.
The Table is a smaller restaurant located right next door to the Mt. Baker Theater. They specialize in Italian influenced dishes made with local fresh ingredients. This restaurant is a product of the Bellingham Pasta Company that was established in 2008. The Table is a little hidden gem that offers delicious food and personalized service. The next time you're headed to the theater, leave a little early and make a night out of it; visit The Table by Bellingham Pasta Co. (I suggest the mac and cheese, it's delicious.)
4. Mambo Italiano
This phenomenal Italian restaurant is located in historic Farihaven. The owner and executive Chef grew up in an Italian restaurant and has added many family recipes to the menu. As with most Bellingham restaurants, freshness and local ingredients are a priority. They get most of their produce from Joe's Garden located on 32nd Street and as much local seafood as they can and all of their breads, dough and sauces are made in house everyday to ensure great quality.
3. Bayou on the Bay
Specializing in down home creole style dishes, Bayou on the Bay and Oyster Bar is a fantastic destination if you want something a little different for lunch or dinner. This New Orleans style restaurant and bar is laid back and fun the food never disappoints. Located just off Holly Street their Location is key. If you're feeling feisty head down to the Bayou for a bloody mary and some jumbalaya and cornbread.
2. Anthony's Hearthfire Grill
Now, I'm a bit biased because I am an employee here but Anthony's Hearthfire Grill is a great destination for good food, great service, and a fantastic view. During the summer the deck is open and has an unbeatable view of Bellingham Bay and the San Juan Islands. They offer one of the best happy hours in Bellingham and an upscale dining experience. Unlike its counterpart, Anthony's homeport, The Hearthfire specializes in steaks and rotisser. The distinguishing feature is a woodstone hearth oven made right here in Bellingham. If you're looking for a place to have date night or a great happy hour, look no further.
1. The Cliff House Restaurant
The Cliff House Restaurant is located on North State Street. It is actually an old house that has been converted into a restaurant. It has been owned and operated by Bolster family since 1969 and to this day is one of the best kept secrets of Bellingham. This fabulous restaurant has one of the most spectacular views of Bellingham Bay and features fresh local ingredients. Their food offerings include steaks, seafood, and pastas but is a tad on the pricey side so save it for a special occasion.
